Emerald Hills Centre in Sherwood Park promises wide sidewalks, plenty of trees

As construction gets underway on the Emerald Hills Centre, Sherwood Park’s newest and eventually largest mall, Darren Durstling looks over the sprawling 62-acre (25-hectare) site with some pride.“This is one of the best sites we’ve ever done. It has great access beside the Yellowhead Highway and is linked to two interchanges at Sherwood Drive and Clover Bar Road, next to the new Strathcona Hospital and across the street from a new 1,400-student high school,” said the partner with WAM Development Group.
And that has made finding tenants — from a variety of fashion and furnishing retailers to restaurants, a major pharmacy and a home improvement store — perhaps less of a challenge.
Planning for the 600,000-square-foot project began three years ago, but the major anchor — Walmart — didn’t immediately sign on.
“But then they called and said they wanted to open by January 2012, and the project took off this spring,” said Durstling. “Everyone else follows once they are on board.”
